Students develop the content area knowledge and the pedagogical background necessary to teach English as a Second Language in grades K-12 in New York state. For additional information, visit the Modern Languages Department .
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Use knowledge of language as a system to analyze samples of learner language.
- Apply theories and research on second language acquisition and on the nature and role of culture to plan and deliver ENL instruction.
- Use research-based practices, strategies, and techniques to plan effective standards-based ENL and content instruction.
- Select, adapt, and use a wide range of developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive materials to plan and deliver differentiated ENL and content instruction, as well as design and use a variety of performance-based classroom assessment tools and techniques to measure student learning and to inform instruction.
Program Standard Grade Point Average Requirement
The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program.

- Professional Preparation GPA
- Minimum GPA of 2.5 in AED 391, EDU 471, HLH 110, 199, PSY 101, 231, 232, or SPE 275
- Courses Applied to ESL Content Core GPA Calculation
- 36 credits in AED 437, 438 or
ESL 300, 301, 302, 303, 400, 401, 402, 403, 404, 422
- Courses Applied to Professional Preparation GPA Calculation
- 17 credits in AED 391, EDU 471, HLH 110, 199, PSY 101, 231, 232, SPE 275
Prerequisite for Admission to the Major
- Overall grade point average of 2.5
