Childhood Education (1-6) [EDC]

The childhood education major prepares students to become elementary school teachers in grades 1-6. Students learn to develop curriculum in all areas of the New York State Learning Standards.

B. Professional Preparation and Pedagogy Courses: 50 credit hours


C. Approved Childhood and Early Childhood Concentrations


30-31 credit hours with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300 and 400 level.

Requirements in General Education and content core may reduce the number of credit hours in a concentration to 24. Approved concentration requirements are listed in the Childhood and Early Childhood program requirements. If a second major is selected as an alternative to the 30-credit hour concentration, the requirements will be listed in the academic department of the second major.

I. Environmental Studies Concentration [EST]


31 credit hours, with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300 level or above

A. Required Environmental Studies Core: 13 credit hours


B. Natural Science Courses: minimum nine credit hours


Please note: some courses listed below may require additional prerequisites.

Total credit hours: 31


Seven credit hours taken in General Education

II. Humanities Concentration [HUM]


30 credit hours, with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300 level or above.

A. Required Humanities Core: 12 credit hours


Select one course from each of the groups below:

Six credit hours taken in General Education

III. Social Sciences Concentration [SOS]


30 credit hours, with a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300 level or above.

B. Social Sciences Electives: 18 credit hours


Select nine credit hours in U.S. studies and nine credit hours in global studies from the list below. Some courses may require additional prerequisites.

United States Studies: nine credit hours


Global Studies: nine credit hours


Total credit hours: 30
