The following courses meet the College's requirement for the bachelor of arts and the major in English . The bachelor of arts requires proficiency in a foreign language.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

Demonstrate different strategies of interpretation, applying critical and theoretical terms, concepts, and methods in relation to a variety of textual forms and other media.
Engage with the work of other critics and writers, collecting, evaluating, and citing such sources effectively.
Construct a sustained and persuasive interpretive or analytical scholarly argument.

A. Required Courses: 24 credit hours

ENG 290 - Introduction to Literary Study (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 302 - Research Methods in Literary Study (3 cr. hr.)
English majors must pass ENG 290, ENG 302 and ENG 380 with a grade of C- or better.
ENG 325 - American Literature Before 1900 (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 326 - American Literature Since 1900 (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 355 - Major Figures in British Literature to 1780 (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 356 - Major Figures in British Literature 1780-Present (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 380 - Literary and Cultural Theory (3 cr. hr.)

One course in literature before 1800 from the following:

ENG 431 - Arthurian Literature (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 432 - Topics in Medieval Literature (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 433 - Shakespeare (3 cr. hr.)
The English Department strongly urges students to take ENG 433
ENG 438 - Seventeenth-Century Poetry and Prose (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 440 - Eighteenth-Century British Literature (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 441 - The Age of Sensibility (3 cr. hr.)
ENG 442 - Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Drama (3 cr. hr.)

For those who meet eligibility requirements
