FSA 535 - Alternative/Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology for Students with Severe or Multiple Disabilities

Introduction to evidence-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies and other assistive technologies for students with severe/multiple disabilities. Prepares course participants to become knowledgeable and contributing team members, along with special education service providers and family members, to asses and support the communication and other technology needs of a child who is non-verbal and/or has complex orthopedic, cognitive or multiple needs for support. (2 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate an understanding of typical and atypical language development in order to address the needs of individuals with complex language and communication needs.
  2. Describe communication tools and technologies utilized to support individuals, and legal requirements under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  3. Assess a focal learner for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) supports by conducting a communication assessment and an ecological inventory in an inclusive setting.
  4. Apply the seven principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to plan, implement, and assess an academic lesson for a focal student who uses text-to-speech software.
  5. Create an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system, which promotes academic and social inclusion in an age/grade appropriate general education classroom.
