ESL 506 - Educating English Language Learners Overview of theory and research on first and second language and literacy development, bilingualism, and the evolution of language policy in the U.S. Examines language prejudice and discrimination as institutionalized by schools and aims to dispel widely held misconceptions regarding the education of English language learners. Prepares mainstream classroom teachers to work effectively with this student population across grade levels and across subject areas. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify cognitive, linguistic, educational, social, and individual factors that may affect the acquisition of English as a second language.
- Analyze the types and benefits of bilingualism and bilingual programs as well as the legal rights of English language learners.
- Design and adapt instruction, materials, and assessments to support English language learners' meeting learning standards in the content areas based on a view of the use of the first language as a right and as an asset.
