FSA 530 - Supporting the Communication of Students with Complex Needs

Overview of typical and atypical language development and evidence-based practice for supporting the needs of children with complex language and communication impairments. (1 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate an understanding of typical and atypical language development in order to address the needs of individuals with complex language and communication needs.
  2. Describe communication tools and technologies utilized to support individuals, and legal requirements under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  3. Apply the seven principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to plan and assess an academic lesson for a focal student who uses text-to speech software.
  4. Create an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system, which promotes academic and social inclusion in an age/grade appropriate general education classroom.
