SHH 681 - Advanced Speech Science

A study of speech sound production. Students will explore anatomic and physiologic bases for speech sound production, speech acoustics, the acoustic analysis of speech, instrumentation and speech perception. Open to students in the M.S. program in communication sciences and disorders. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the acoustic and physiologic characteristics of speech sounds production, including neurology, respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonance in typical versus disordered speech.
  2. Identify the instrumentation to measure the physiological functions of the nervous, respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory systems.
  3. Discuss clinical and research applications of speech anatomy and physiology.
