SHH 673 - Communication Disorders in Adults

A study of the theoretical basis; prevention, diagnosis and management of adult language disorders resulting from the aphasias, right hemisphere impairment, traumatic brain injury and dementias. Special emphasis is given to various cultural perspectives as well as ethical, safety and legal aspects. Open to students in the M.S. program in communication sciences and disorders. Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C- in SHH 681 and SHH 674. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. State the classifications, etiologies, and symptomatology of the aphasias, right hemisphere impairment, traumatic brain injury and the dementias.
  2. State standardized and informal evaluation procedures for language/cognitive skills for individuals with aphasia, right hemisphere impairment, traumatic brain injury and the dementias.
  3. Design language and cognitive treatment plans for individuals with aphasia, right hemisphere impairment, traumatic brain injury, and the dementias based on evidenced-based practice patterns.
