LIT 516 - Teaching Literacy in the Intermediate Grades

The purpose of this course is to emphasize reading, writing, listening and speaking at the intermediate school level. Students will learn to assess and instruct an intermediate-grade student through class and tutoring sessions. In addition, students will examine their philosophy of reading, related research, special needs, multicultural issues, the use of technology in tutoring and integrating content areas. Prerequisite: LIT 511. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze and plan for the use of literacy instructional practices for upper elementary students that are culturally-responsive and differentiated, utilizing research and background knowledge about child development to guide their decision-making.
  2. Apply a variety of teaching strategies and authentic forms of assessment to develop a positive, culturally-responsive, and data-driven teaching-learning environment that is inclusive and developmentally appropriate for children in the upper elementary grades.
  3. Identify, analyze, and utilize research-supported and research-based literacy instructional practices, resources, and tools that consider the cultural and developmental needs of children in the upper elementary grades.
  4. Using assessment data, plan for comprehension strategy instruction that matches learners' needs and utilizes the gradual release of responsibility model that is developmentally appropriate for the upper elementary grades.
