DNC 430 - Dance Audition Skills Through History and Style

A practical experience in learning to audition as a professional Musical Theater Performer. A study of the history of influential Musical Theater directors and choreographers is paired with physical practice of their styles and techniques in class, and used to gain understanding of varying Musical Theater Dance forms. This knowledge is then applied to practical skills in auditioning- professional presentation, efficient choreography retention, and acting through dance. Prerequisites: DNC 102 and DNC 201. (1 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of dance in the American Musical from the early 20th century to today, and use this knowledge to improve their audition success.
  • Perform accurately within the styles of pivotal directors and choreographers of the American Musical.
  • Utilize Jack Cole dance technique and warm up to develop and maintain the needed strength and flexibility to audition.
  • Attend a professional audition following industry standards.
  • Learn and physically recreate dance choreography efficiently as a necessary skill for future professionals.
  • Integrate acting into dance choreography.
  • Prepare for and succeed in an audition process.
