SHH 488 - Autism Spectrum Disorders

Develop familiarity with a variety of topics that relate to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Issues related to diagnosis, correlational factors, and characteristics of Autism across the lifespan will be presented. Current trends and interventions will be discussed. Prerequisite: SHH 370. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including definitions in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), characteristics related to cognition, development, behavior, and vocabulary used to describe these disorders within the field.
  2. Identify and describe the theorized etiologies/causal factors of ASD.
  3. Differentiate the characteristics and issues surrounding ASD across the lifespan periods.
