ECO 390 - Health Economics

Analysis of the demand and supply of health care and the role of insurance. Examination of the institutional structure of the healthcare sector and other public policy issues that affect the production, distribution and consumption of healthcare. Prerequisite: ECO 111. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain how economic theory is used to predict the supply, demand and consumption of health care.
  2. Explain how socioeconomic disparities affect access, cost and overall health of consumers. 
  3. Explain the role insurance plays in the health care market. 
  4. Explain how government health care policy and regulation is influenced and established by interactions with individuals, interest groups and legislative members.
  5. Explain the role pharmaceutical companies, technology, and innovation play in the price of health care.  
  6. Discuss the structure, delivery and financing of health care in the United States and other industrialized nations.
