Historical roots of consumer society; mechanisms and modes of persuasion; theories of consumption; social problems of consumer society. Prerequisites which may be taken concurrently: SOC 100 or SOC 150 or ANT 102. Category B. Fulfills: LASR; PRES. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe through a critical lens the historical development of consumerism and mass consumption.
  2. Describe the cultural and social structural forces that drive mass consumption.
  3. Explain the mechanisms and modes through which people are enticed and expected to consume.
  4. Analyze how consumerism leads to the greater entrenchment of social hierarchies including those of racism, classism, and sexism.
  5. Explicate the environmental destructiveness of global mass consumption.
