SHH 383 - Basic Audiology

Anatomy, physiology, pathology and audiological assessment of the hearing mechanism. Prerequisite: SHH 382. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the pathways by which sound travels through the auditory system and the means by which the auditory system is assessed across age groups.
  2. Interpret behavioral hearing test results and identify types of hearing loss through the analysis of audiograms.
  3. Describe how the nature and degree of hearing loss impacts communication abilities. 
  4. Describe and discuss common causes of hearing impairment in children and adults.
