SHH 360 - Teaching Children with Limited English Proficiency This course prepares students to provide competent speech-language pathology services to culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Issues involving cross-linguistic and cross-cultural differences, communication development in bilingual/multilingual students, multi-cultural issues that impact identification, assessment, treatment, and management of communication disorders will be studied. Prerequisite: SHH 480 or 481, either of which may be taken concurrently. (3 cr. hr.) Frequency code A = offered every semester
Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain, through spoken and written formats, the effect of cultural and linguistic diversity on English language comprehension, production, and use in school settings.
- Discuss communication development, differences, and disorders in children who are culturally/linguistically diverse.
- Analyze the impact of cultural/linguistic diversity on language and literacy across all linguistic areas within the school environment.
