MUS 101 - World Music

Study of music cultures of the world's indigenous peoples. Shared musical ideas, social organization, common repertoires and material culture. Fulfills: GE 3, GESS and GE 6, GEWH; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify stylistic traits, textures and forms that are characteristic of the music culture(s) studied.
  2. Use a vocabulary that describes music forms and ideas in relationship to cultural and social contexts.
  3. Apply objective listening strategies that are based on specific musical criteria.
  4. Describe representative works based on stylistic, formal, textual, and tonal criteria.
  5. Evaluate the performance of the literature that was studied.
  6. Demonstrate basic musical research skills in traditional library and electronic media settings.
