ESL 402 - Teaching English as a Second Language in the Content Area

Materials and techniques for the teaching of English as a Second Language (ESL) through content areas such as mathematics, social studies and science. Application of theories of second language acquisition and pedagogy to teaching ESL in these areas. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss and explain how sheltered instruction meets the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) without hindering the progress of native English speakers.
  2. Integrate the features of SIOP in instructional design to meet the needs of ELLs and to use it as an instrument of professional development.
  3. Analyze the centrality of register variation in (second) language teaching and learning.
  4. Create lesson plans that reflect successful teaching practices in the areas of mathematics, sciences, and social studies.
