Description

The Human Service Studies Program offers students a cutting-edge program of study. Career opportunities abound in the field of human services. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, one of the most significant areas of employment growth in the next decade or so will be in human service occupations. The degree program combines a broad liberal education in the social and behavioral sciences and prepares students for employment in human services or graduate study in related fields.  Graduates from this program are prepared to demonstrate the knowledge and skills for effective communication, listening, interviewing, case management, and cultural competence. 

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

1. Develop and demonstrate core knowledge, attitudes, values, and skills in human services practice. 
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the purpose, structure and processes of community and governmental organizations focused on human services through the lifespan. 
3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the contribution of social policy and funding mechanisms to the delivery of human service interventions. 
4. Describe determinants that contribute to the need for human services interventions. 
5. Describe the impact of prejudice and discrimination on human behavior and potential. 
6. Demonstrate and understanding of social justice and social advocacy from current and historical aspects.
7. Articulate and apply key theories, principles, and approaches underlying human services interventions. 
8. Interpret and apply ethical principles in human services practice. 
9. Interpret research to understand best practices in the prevention, intervention, and treatment of complex social problems. 
10. Assess, build, implement and evaluate effective human service programs. 
11. Demonstrate collaborative communication with stakeholders. 
12. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively in human services practice using written communications, oral communications, and listening skills. 
13. Appropriately use information technology to support the delivery of human service programs and services. 
14. Demonstrate interviewing, case management, crisis intervention, client assessment, and cultural competence skills. 
15. Utilize appropriate knowledge and skills in human services experiential learning environments.
