This major in the Sociology/Anthropology Department provides students with a broad degree of flexibility in choosing a career after graduation, the opportunity to explore careers in the human services, public administration and management, and a general background for graduate work in the social sciences, public policy, law and social work. In a rapidly changing world, students who major in sociology obtain a solid liberal arts education that fosters versatility in the world of work and good citizenship.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Define and apply the basic sociological concepts.
- Explain the role of social structure, culture, and social processes in the causation and amelioration of social problems.
- Evaluate the major sociological theories and theorists.
- Design sociological research projects.
- Describe and analyze different kinds of datasets, including surveys, longitudinal data, and single measures.
- Evaluate and argue their ideas and the ideas of others clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Required Courses: 15 credit hours
Sociology Electives: 24 credit hours
Choose 24 credit hours as outlined below:
- 6 credit hours from SOC 200-499
- 12 credit hours from SOC 300-499
- 6 credit hours from SOC 400-499
Students may replace up to 3 credits of SOC elective coursework with 3 credits of ANT coursework. Students may replace up to 9 credits of SOC elective coursework with 9 credits of CRM coursework.
