Art: Concentration in Art History [ART_ARTH]

Art History foundation courses provide a systematic exploration of the major art traditions of the world. Upper-division courses introduce the student to more intensive study of the art of a particular period or region through a variety of approaches and techniques of art historical analysis. 

The diverse interests of Cortland's Art History faculty provide the student with opportunities to broaden global and multicultural awareness through an understanding of artistic achievement in our own and other cultures. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Utilize the elements of art and principles of design.
  2. Execute visual and written/verbal skills.
    1. Describe work in a statement that contextualizes it within the field of art (contemporary/historical)
    2. Discuss their research and work verbally in a competent manner.
    3. Demonstrate proficient presentation of work in professional setting.
  3. Analyze the interaction between art, media and culture.
    1. Identify relationships between art, media and culture.
    2. Demonstrate an understanding of terminology in relation to art, media and culture.
  4. Analyze works of art from diverse art historical perspectives demonstrating comprehension of global viewpoints in visual culture.
    1. Evaluate media from a range of global perspectives.
    2. Differentiate between the global perspectives in each culture examined.
    3. Examine various historical periods and geographical locations within the media.
  5. Evaluate works of art/design using visual vocabulary expressing awareness and dialogue with historical and contemporary influences.
    1. Demonstrate knowledge of historical and contemporary influences within the arts and sciences.
    2. Employ a visual vocabulary to critically evaluate works of art.
    3. Appraise multiple works of art/design through the lens of this visual vocabulary.
  6. Create a significant, culminating body of work that demonstrates competence and depth of knowledge.
    1. Demonstrate ability to communicate in a variety of contexts about art.
    2. Develop skills necessary to conduct research in the field using both primary and secondary resources. 
    3. Construct a well-organized written research project. 

Major in Art with a concentration in Art History


A. Required Art History Foundation Courses: 6 credit hours


B. Core Exposure in Art History: 12 credit hours


C. Additional Art History: 6 credit hours


Select two additional Art History courses from areas 1-4.

D. Art History Elective: 12 credit hours


Select art history elective courses from the 300-400 level.

E. Field Study: 1 credit hour


Related Areas: 15 credit hours

It is recommended that three hours be directly related to student's area of interest in section C of the art history core above.

C. Electives: 3 credit hours


Chosen in consultation with the student's advisor from literature, philosophy, political science, or anthropology/sociology, which relates directly to the temporal, spatial, or cultural context of an art history course taken currently or in the past. Three additional hours of a second or third language also may be taken.
