Recreation: Concentration in Camp Management [REC_CAMP]

The camp management concentration in the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department prepares students for programmatic and administrative responsibilities in seasonal or year-round camps and conference centers. The curriculum in this concentration balances management-oriented skills with outdoor recreation/environmental education knowledge. Its emphasis is on commercial and entrepreneurial recreation, marketing, accounting, camp counseling, camp and outdoor program administration, environmental and outdoor education, and youth development. The core curriculum of this major is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT).

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the following entry-level knowledge:  a) the nature and scope of the relevant park, recreation, tourism or related professions and their associated industries; b) techniques and processes used by professionals and workers in these industries; and c) the foundation of the profession in history, science and philosophy.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to design, implement, and evaluate services that facilitate targeted human experiences and that embrace personal and cultural dimensions of diversity.
  3. Demonstrate entry-level knowledge about operations and strategic management/administration in parks, recreation, tourism and/or related professions.
  4. Demonstrate the sustained ability to apply the recreation process, use diverse, structured ways of thinking to solve problems related to different facets of professional practice, engage in advocacy, and stimulate innovation.

Program Standard Grade Point Average Requirement

The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program. In order to enroll in REC 475, students must achieve the following:

  • Program Standard GPA
    • Minimum GPA of 2.5 in any REC course except REC 475
  • Recreation Major Requirements
    • 41 credits of required REC courses except REC 475

Total Credit Hours Required for Major: 71-75


B. Concentration in Camp Management: 21 credit hours


C. Internship: 12 credit hours


Students may not enroll in additional course work while enrolled in the internship.

D. Other: 8-12 credit hours


  • Activity Requirement: (2-6 cr. hr.), at least two different recreation activities
  • First Aid Requirement: certification in Wilderness First Aid or higher (see advisement manual for acceptable certifications). This certification is a prerequisite for REC 475: Internship in Recreation and Leisure Services and must be current for the duration of the REC 475 internship.
