Art: Concentration in Art History [ART_ARTH]

Art History foundation courses provide a systematic exploration of the major art traditions of the world. Upper-division courses introduce the student to more intensive study of the art of a particular period or region through a variety of approaches and techniques of art historical analysis. 

The diverse interests of Cortland's Art History faculty provide the student with opportunities to broaden global and multicultural awareness through an understanding of artistic achievement in our own and other cultures. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Utilize the elements of art and principles of design.
  2. Execute visual and written/verbal skills applicable to the presentation of their work.
  3. Understand the ways in which art, media and culture affect each other and society-at-large.
  4. Analyze critically works of art from traditional to nontraditional mediums, diverse genres and a wide range of historical periods and geographical locations, demonstrating comprehension of global perspectives in visual culture.
  5. Evaluate works of art/design using a personalized visual vocabulary that expresses knowledge, awareness and dialogue with historical and contemporary influences within arts, humanities, sciences and technology.
  6. Demonstrate competence in the practice of art history with considerable depth of knowledge integrating and synthesizing information associated with tools and techniques of art-historical scholarship, by creating a significant, culminating body of work.

Program Standard Grade Point Average Requirement

The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program.

Major in Art with a concentration in Art History


A. Required Art History Foundation Courses: 6 credit hours


B. Core Exposure in Art History: 12 credit hours


C. Additional Art History: 6 credit hours


Select two additional Art History courses from areas 1-4.

D. Art History Elective: 12 credit hours


Select art history elective courses from the 300-400 level.

E. Field Study: 1 credit hour


Related Areas: 15 credit hours


A. Exposure and Skills Core in Art Studio: 6 credit hours

It is recommended that three hours be directly related to student's area of interest in section C of the art history core above.

C. Electives: 3 credit hours


Chosen in consultation with the student's advisor from literature, philosophy, political science, or anthropology/sociology, which relates directly to the temporal, spatial, or cultural context of an art history course taken currently or in the past. Three additional hours of a second or third language also may be taken.
