Adolescence Education: Spanish (7-12) [ASP]

Students develop language skills and cultural awareness and acquire the pedagogical background necessary to teach Spanish in grades 7-12 in New York state. There is an admission to the program prerequisite of an overall grade point average of 2.5.

Career Potential

  • Spanish in the elementary school
    Note: Spanish adolescence education majors are eligible for Spanish K-6 extension by taking ICC 324: Foreign Language for the Elementary School
  • Middle school teacher
  • High school teacher

B. Required Linguistics Course: 3 credit hours


Course is taught in English.

D. Two Spanish Courses at the 400 level: 6 credit hours


E. Core Professional Education Courses: 41-42 cr. hr.


F. Eligibility for Student Teaching


  • A 2.5 grade point average overall
  • A 2.5 grade point average in required professional education course work
  • A 2.7 grade point average in major course work
  • 24 credit hours of SPA courses
  • A score of Intermediate High or better on the Oral Proficiency Interview
  • A grade of B or better in AED 437 and 438 Methods block
  • CARR and SAVE workshops

Grade point averages are figured with all major and/or professional courses taken to date, even if not required prior to student teaching.

Total Credit Hours Required for Graduation: 120
