Overview

Build on your passion for teaching and helping people improve their health and the health of communities by pursuing the M.S.Ed. in health education at SUNY Cortland. Now that you hold both an undergraduate degree in health education and your initial teaching certificate in health, you’re ready to extend your capacities in curriculum and instruction, or administration.

Program Highlights

Through a combination of required and elective courses, you’ll investigate health-related topics such as drug education for teachers; death, bereavement and suicide; family life education; human sexuality; safety problems and programs; public health and the environment; HIV and AIDS education; school health programs; health and aging; women’s health and global health problems, among others. Your professional education encompasses curriculum construction, research methods, assessment and evaluation, and the option to pursue a special research problem, a master’s thesis or sit for a comprehensive examination.

Career Potential

When you successfully complete the M.S.Ed. in health education at SUNY Cortland, you’ll be well prepared to enjoy a career such as health educator in schools, many types of community agencies or community colleges. You also may choose to pursue a position as a prevention specialist in school or community agencies, a school district health education coordinator or a public and community health educator.

Admission Requirements

 In addition to meeting the requirements for admission to a graduate degree program, you should present the following for enrollment in the Master of Science in Education in Health Education program:

1. Completion of an undergraduate bachelor’s degree
2. A minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 2.8
3. Names, addresses and telephone numbers of three references.
4. A copy of current teacher certification in health or documentation that certification requirements have been met.

Entry into the Health Department graduate programs is very competitive, with more eligible applicants than can be accommodated. The 2.8 cumulative undergraduate grade point average criterion is the minimal acceptable grade point average, but does not guarantee admission into a degree program.
