PHY 111 - Science and Pseudoscience

A survey of topics in science and pseudo-science and how we distinguish between them while accounting for good faith missteps and false theories. Explores the scientific method, falsifiability, the roles of trust and expert opinion, and assessment of the reliability of information and information sources. Fulfills: GEST; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the difference between scientific and pseudo-scientific thinking.
  2. Describe the scientific method, including the role of disproven theories.
  3. Identify examples of pseudoscience in the historical record.
  4. Assess the credibility of information sources.
  5. Construct evidence-based arguments for or against particular ideas.
