SOC 318 - Cross-Cultural Study of Health and Illness Investigates how different cultures, including non-western, respond to pain, suffering, illness, sex, death and healing in specific contexts; how experiences such as pain, misfortune and ecstasy are produced in a number of different societies. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the relationships between biomedical science and social science.
- Critically examine culturally produced, interpreted, and understood experiences of pain, misfortune, illness, suffering, death and healing.
- Engage in a cross-cultural analysis of people's perceptions of bodies, health and medicine.
