ANT 325 - Archaeology of Death A biocultural examination of death, dying, and mortuary rituals. Applies a cross-cultural perspective to ethnographic and archaeological data to explore the various ways the dead are commemorated and what human remains and mortuary rituals can tell us about communities past and present. Prerequisite: ANT 102, ANT 103, or ANT 104. Fulfills: LASR; PRES, GECP. (3 cr. hr.) Frequency code C = offered at least once every two years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe Western biomedical approaches to death and dying.
- Evaluate Western mortuary rituals within a comparative cross-cultural framework.
- Evaluate bioarchaeological and mortuary data to understand death and dying within different cultural contexts.
- Describe ethical issues related to the study of the dead.
