MUS 133 - Music and Queer Identity

A general survey of music composed and performed by lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender people from the 18th century to the 21st century. Fulfills: GE 11, GEDI; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code C = offered at least once every two years

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Define and illustrate basic musical terms such as: beat, meter, harmony, melody, texture, theme.
  2. Identify universal musical characteristics, compositions, composers and performers from eighteenth century music to twenty-first century music.
  3. Identify the historical influences on different musical styles.
  4. Identify common musical genres such as: symphony, jazz, disco, popular music, hip-hop.
  5. Identify issues in music pertaining to LGBTQ composers, musicians, subjects, and audiences.
  6. Analyze the intersection of sexualities and music by reading biographical, historical, and theoretical texts and by expressing their ideas in writing.
