SHH 280 - Phonetics

Nature of spoken language explored with respect to phonology, articulatory and clinical phonetics, and transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet and diacritic markers. Includes information on phonological development and disorders, phonological awareness and dialect. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the linguistic and physiologic bases of speech production.
  2. Identify and transcribe vowels and consonants as organized according to the International Phonetic Alphabet.
  3. Apply sound identification and transcription in the phonetic assessment of typical and disordered speech.
