MUS 110 - Survey of African American Music

A general survey of African American music tracing the origin from colonial music of the 17th century to rap music of the 20th century. Also listed as AAS 110. Fulfills: GE 11, GEDI; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze injustice, in the forms of prejudice and discrimination, as it relates to African American music.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of oppression via race, ethnicity, gender and class as it exists on both individual and institutional levels.
  3. Analyze issues of cultural appropriation, co-opting, and who stands to gain from such practices.
  4. Identify musical styles and their place in our interlocking cultural history, along with sharpening and deepening listening skills.
