FRE 417 - Literature of the Nineteenth Century

Romanticism, realism, symbolism, naturalism. Novel from 1815 to 1850, novel from 1850 to 1900, poetry of Romantic period, symbolist poetry, drama and opera after 1850, according to subtitle. May be repeated as subtitle changes. Prerequisite: FRE 311, 315 or 316. Fulfills: LASR; WI. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the cultural and historical currents of the century.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to speak, read, and write at the Advanced (low, mid, and high) levels of French, as defined by the ACTFL scale.
  3. Analyze important literary works of this specific century by paying attention to literary currents and techniques used in the dominant genres of that century and also by relating specific works to the wider socio-historical context of the century.
