ANT 406 - Contact and Culture Change

Mechanisms of acculturation, dominance patterns, culture conservatism and receptivity, and applied anthropology with examples drawn from non-literate societies. Prerequisite: ANT 102, 103, or 104. Fulfills: LASR; PRES, GECP; WI. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the methods of acculturation employed by dominant colonial powers.
  2. Critique previous colonial-era theories regarding the appropriate treatment of contacted/colonized indigenous populations.
  3. Analyze the impact of forced culture change on indigenous populations.
  4. Summarize present-day anthropological methods designed to mitigate the impacts of forced change and globalization.
