SPM 650 - Research Methods in Sport Management

A review of the major considerations and tasks involved in designing and conducting a thesis or research project. The goal for students who successfully complete this course is to be able to produce and defend the methodology of their proposed research, be prepared to carry out the various tasks involved in doing research, and to find the resources to guide them through their research. The theme throughout this course will be on comparing and/or combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to social science and management research. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain various qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and when each would be most appropriate in research.
  2. Identify and analyze problems in various settings within the sport enterprise and develop appropriate research based on sound research design and processes.
  3. Demonstrate the research process including the creation of research questions, the elements of sound research design, data collection and analysis, and data publication options.
