PED 638 - Positive Behavior Management and Discipline in Physical Education This course is designed to address issues, models and strategies when dealing with behavior management and discipline in physical education. The Behavioralist Model, the Psychoanalytical Model and the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility Model (TPSR) will provide the basic learning framework for the course. (3 cr. hr.) Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe and define the components of school-wide positive behavior support and its relationship with risk and protective factors and multicultural issues.
- Organize an effective physical education management system for all students, particularly those with exceptional learning needs (e.g., schedules, procedures, routines, signals, physical set-up of the gym, rules and consequences, monitoring, transitions, etc.).
- Assess the social and emotional needs of students to build strong, positive relationships with children and youth of diverse backgrounds and all ability levels.
- Formulate ways to use positive behavioral instructional (PBIS) supports when teaching physical education.
- Evaluate a school's behavioral climate (school-wide supports) and identify strengths and areas in which to improve the physical education environment.
