ICC 624 - Methods of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Methods of teaching reading, writing, speaking and communicating in English to speakers of other languages. Application of theories of second language acquisition and pedagogy to the teaching of English as a second language. Prerequisite: Graduate status. (3 cr. hr.) Frequency code C = offered at least once every two years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Review and critique the major approaches to ESL teaching while evaluating current methods and creating personal idea of best second language methodology.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and appropriately utilize techniques for teaching language skills as they relate to research findings and sound pedagogical practices, while reviewing assessment practices in each skill area.
- Develop lesson plans focusing on specific skills but integrating others.
- Critique their colleagues' and their own recorded mini-lessons (peer teaching).
- Develop an integrated-skills lesson highlighting the knowledge acquired throughout the course.
