COM 235 - Introduction to Media Literacy

Critical media approach to the historical, theoretical and ethical implications of technology's impact on society. Topics include technological literacy, ethics, values and technological applications to develop a critical lens for being consumers and producers of media. Fulfills: GE 12; LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the manner in which value judgments are justified and how interpretation of technical information can lead to different conclusions.  
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of issues at the interface of science, technology and society and how the methods of science and scientific data are understood in the context of social issues. 
  3. Analyze ethical issues relating to communication and the media. 
  4. Use and analyze information sources and evidence. 
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the message — literacy.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of semiotics — the meaning behind media messages.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of ideology in the context of our media system.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of the media in terms of its representation.
  9. Demonstrate an understanding of the commercial nature of our media systems.
