CRM 222 - Global Criminology

An examination of crime within the context of global social relations. A cross-national examination of criminal justice systems and social institutions that maintain social order. Prerequisite: ANT 102 or SOC 100 or 150. Also listed as SOC 222. Fulfills LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of a comparative approach to criminological study, especially as it relates to understanding crime as a social construct and the evaluation of criminological theory.
  2. Describe key sources of criminological data.
  3. Outline the challenges that criminologists face when studying crime globally.
  4. Detail differences in criminal justice systems and social institutions established for policing, corrections, and other formal (and informal) forms of social control.
  5. Describe the position of the United States in its global community regarding crime and crime control.
