COM 425 - Girl Culture and Media

Historical overview of Girls Studies; examines issues of gender equity, psychological development, socialization, identity formation, self-esteem, sexuality, political and social activism, as well as popular culture representations of girls including non-binary girls and transgirls in both the U.S. and international contexts. Prerequisite: COM 100. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate issues and experiences of women in historical and contemporary contexts.
  2. Analyze the role of the media in defining gender roles and stereotypes.
  3. Describe ways in which the intersections of culture, race, class, age, sexuality and ability result in different and sometimes contradictory experiences for women.
