EDU 340 - Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners

Evidence-based strategies for responsive and culturally relevant teaching, with special emphasis on English language learners in elementary classrooms. Includes observation and application of techniques to build a multicultural, inclusive classroom community for all learners. Includes field placement. Prerequisites: EDU 331, and 333 or FSA 340. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Examine theories related to culturally and linguistically responsive teaching practices with an emphasis on English language learners.
  2. Implement literacy-based activities to promote an inclusive classroom community.
  3. Demonstrate critical self-examination of biases, values, and assumptions that impact interactions with culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
  4. Develop a written advocacy plan that addresses a need or issue affecting underrepresented students.
