HLH 380 - Introduction to Health Informatics and Communication

A broad introduction to public health informatics and health communication with a focus on understanding the development and the practical application of these areas in school, community and public health. Not open to students with credit for COM 450. Prerequisite: CPN 101 or 103, or equivalents. (3 cr. hr.)
Frequency code B = offered at least once per year

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Access diverse public health databases to identify valid sources of secondary data.
  2. Utilize the research literature to inform the design of a health communication campaign.
  3. Analyze a health issue using an ecological framework to identify opportunities for intervention or advocacy.
  4. Apply models and theories for a health communication campaign.
  5. Create health communication materials tailored to a specific population.
  6. Describe tools clinicians can use to enhance communication with their patients.
