EDU 374 - Teaching Elementary School Science

Content and methods for teaching inquiry science in the elementary school. Special attention is given to how children learn science, interpretation of science education research, and integrating science across the curriculum. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Examine personal beliefs and attitudes by engaging in critical reflections regarding the learning and teaching of science.
  2. Develop standards-based, integrated, and equitable instructional plans for the learning and teaching of science in the elementary classroom.
  3. Demonstrate nature of science knowledge as appropriate for the elementary school curriculum.
  4. Model professional skills required in elementary science including: reading, writing, listening, speaking, problem solving, teaching and learning in diverse settings, and cooperative group work.
  5. Apply appropriate criteria when selecting evidence-based resources and activities for the teaching of science.
