BIO 303 - Microbiology and Human Disease

Introduction to microorganisms and microbiological laboratory techniques. Emphasis on roles of microorganisms in disease, mechanisms of immunity. Primarily for students majoring in health; not open to biology majors. Lecture/Lab Hours: Two lectures, one three-hour laboratory, one two-hour laboratory. Fulfills: LASR. (4 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Diagram the fundamental cell structures of bacteria, viruses and fungi as well as describe the evolutionary relationships and factors that define these organisms.
  2. Describe and illustrate the ways microorganisms interact with humans both externally, in the environment and internally, within our bodies.
  3. Apply scientific thinking and methodology to design and interpret experiments relating to the biology of microorganisms.
  4. Interpret data related to microbial processes and effectively communicate this thinking through composition of written assignments.
