BIO 110 - Principles of Biology I

Origin, evolution and diversity of life; molecular, cellular and genetic basis of life, with emphasis on scientific method. Not open to those having credit for BIO 201 or 202 (or equivalent) or to biology majors. Lecture/Lab Hours: Three lectures, one two-hour laboratory. Fulfills: GE 2; LASR. (4 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain biological concepts of cellular organization and metabolism, genetic basis of inheritance, DNA structure and function, evolution, and biodiversity.
  2. Apply the scientific method to evaluate whether data support or refute hypotheses.
  3. Perform experiments utilizing safe and standard laboratory techniques, including but not limited to microscopy, chemical assays, and pipetting.
  4. Integrate current scientific developments to related course content with effective written communication.
