ATR 434 - Field Experience in Athletic Training V

The field experience will provide students with the opportunity to develop specific competencies in athletic training. Based on prerequisite requirements, this experience provides for a progressive development of technical skills and knowledge as part of an ongoing two-year field experience as required by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). This experience partially fulfills the minimum field experience requirement. This experience is reserved for students who have not satisfactorily met all the terms from their contract remediation received in ATR 433. A student who does not earn a satisfactory grade in this course will not be endorsed for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. Prerequisite: Consent of program director. (1 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Practice health care in a manner that is compliant with their level of education, the BOC Standards of Professional Practice and applicable institutional/organizational, local, state, and federal laws, regulations, rules, and guidelines.
  2. Perform examinations to formulate a diagnosis and plan of care for patients with all health conditions commonly seen in athletic training practice including acute conditions, general medical conditions and behavioral health conditions including working with other health care professionals to monitor these patients' treatment, compliance, progress, and readiness to participate.
  3. Develop, implement, and supervise comprehensive programs and interventions including medication to maximize therapeutic effect to optimize sport performance that are safe and specific to the client's activity.
  4. Demonstrate administrative duties and business principles to the management of physical, human, and financial resources in the administration and delivery of healthcare services including evaluating systems for quality assurance and improvement.
  5. Assess the duties and responsibilities of the athletic trainer as a healthcare provider within the context of the continually evolving healthcare system including the AT role in administrative role such as patient file management, policies and procedures, referrals, inventory management, etc.
  6. Illustrate the role of the athletic trainer as a healthcare provider within the context of an evolving healthcare system while practicing collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.
