ANT 314 - Peoples of Latin America

Historical and contemporary review of Latin American societies with emphasis on the ethnology of indigenous people. Particular attention paid to the role Western colonial policies have played in shaping contemporary conflicts. Prerequisite: ANT 102 or 300. Fulfills: LASR. (3 cr. hr.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural and social complexity of Latin America from the perspective of indigenous peoples.
  2. Describe indigenous adaptations to diverse environments.
  3. Analyze the challenges of maintaining indigenous culture through a colonial history of abuse and exploitation.
  4. Assess and compare various indigenous experiences in resisting past and present domination.
