Overview

What's "inside" everything that makes up the world we know? What systems govern the structure and function of all forms of matter? Such are the questions that excite you as a scientist who studies chemistry. You want to light the fire of enthusiasm in the next generation of scientific explorers. With your undergraduate degree in chemistry or a closely related field, you can pursue your love of teaching "the central science" by studying for the M.A.T. in adolescence education: chemistry (7-12) at SUNY Cortland.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Understand and articulate the knowledge and practices of contemporary science. They interrelate and interpret important concepts, ideas, and applications in their fields of licensure.
  2. Understand how students learn and develop scientific knowledge. Preservice teachers use scientific inquiry to develop this knowledge for all students.
  3. Plan for engaging all students in science learning by setting appropriate goals that are consistent with knowledge of how students learn science and are aligned with state and national standards. The plans reflect the nature and social context of science, inquiry, and appropriate safety considerations.
  4. Design and select learning activities, instructional settings, and resources--including science-specific technology, to achieve those goals; and they plan fair and equitable assessment strategies to evaluate if the learning goals are met.
  5. Demonstrate and maintain chemical safety, safety procedures, and the ethical treatment of living organisms needed in the P-12 science classroom appropriate to their area of licensure.
  6. Provide evidence to show that P-12 students' understanding of major science concepts, principles, theories, and laws have changed as a result of instruction by the candidate and that student knowledge is at a level of understanding beyond memorization. Candidates provide evidence for the diversity of students they teach.
  7. Develop knowledge and understanding of the ever changing knowledge base of both content, and science pedagogy, including approaches for addressing inequities and inclusion for all students in science. They identify with and conduct themselves as part of the science education community.

Program Highlights

Enhance your content knowledge through graduate courses in chemistry as you immerse yourself in learning about successful classroom teaching. In your introduction to adolescence education and advanced developmental psychology, you'll explore the nature of the adolescent learner. Through courses in literacy development, language acquisition and science teaching methodology, you'll develop teaching strategies that work best with students whose ability, motivation and interests differ widely. In your field experiences and student teaching, you'll work in public school science classrooms with veteran teachers who support your integration of educational theory with the best teaching practices.

Culminating Experience

In addition to fulfilling specific requirements for the degree established by the Chemistry Department, you'll complete a culminating master's project.

Career Potential

When you earn the M.A.T. in adolescence education: chemistry (7-12), you will have fulfilled the New York State Education Department's requirements for initial certification in chemistry for grades 7-12.

Evaluation Policy

  2. Official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended to be forwarded directly to SUNY Cortland Graduate Admissions Office indicating a major in chemistry or functionally related area.
    Note: Candidates for admission must present evidence of bachelor's degree conferral prior to the start of their academic program.
  3. Three letters of recommendation from former professors or professional colleagues who can speak to the candidate's preparation and competence for teaching science in grades 7-12 (submitted online with the application).

  5. Statement of Goals (250 words or less)

Admissions Criteria

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  1. An undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale)
  2. An overall undergraduate GPA of 2.7 and above on a 4.0 scale in all courses, in the major, and in related areas of science and mathematics
  3. At least 30 credit hours of course work in chemistry
  4. Introductory biology and geology (totaling at least three semesters)
  5. At least eight credit hours of introductory physics

Master of Arts in Teaching - Adolescence Education: Chemistry 7-12


Program Requirements


The M.A.T. in Adolescence Education: Chemistry (7-12) is designed for applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related field and who are seeking initial certification to teach chemistry in grades 7-12.

A. Content


* Nine credit hours in graduate chemistry

C. Culminating Master's Project: Three credit hours


  • (3 cr. hr.)
  • Any students who receives an incomplete grade in SCI 699 must register for SCI 697 Extension of Graduate Culminating Activity (1 cr. hr.) each subsequent semester until the Master’s Project is completed, not to exceed one year.

D. Continuation in the Program and Eligibility to Student Teach


To remain in the program and to be eligible to student teach, a minimum grade point average of 3.0 must be earned in three categories: overall, in graduate chemistry, and in pedagogy. Nine credit hours in graduate chemistry and 22 credit hours in pedagogy must be completed prior to student teaching. Additionally, eligibility to student teach requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall, in graduate chemistry, and in pedagogy during the semester immediately prior to student teaching.

Specific information regarding additional requirements for qualification for the initial certificate in New York state may be found at Teacher Certification.

For example, completion of the following must be documented to fulfill New York State certification requirements:

  1. HLH 110: Personal and Community Health (3 cr. hr.) or HLH 199: Critical School Health Issues (2 cr. hr.)
  2. One year college-level foreign language or its equivalent
  3. Completion of the following workshops:
  • Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (CARR)
  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
  • Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)
