Tourism and Recreation [BS_TORC]

The Tourism Management major prepares students as job-ready candidates for management level careers in the dynamic and expanding field of sustainable tourism and events. The curriculum provides experiential learning opportunities to combine principles with practice to develop, design and deliver tourism and event initiatives. The sustainable approach focuses on environmentally sound, culturally attuned, and economically resilient tourism and events that improve quality of life for people and the communities they live in. 

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Create financial plans, budgets, and cost control strategies to regulate and optimize resources
  2. Identify the managerial role in the design and operations of tourism and event venues
  3. Apply core management competencies including finance, human resources, marketing, planning and operations across public, private and non-profit sectors.
  4. Identify principles of environmental sustainability and apply to tourism management
  5. Identify relevant statuses, code, permits and policies authorizing and guiding the requisite development and operations of tourism and events.
  6. Develop, design and deliver tourism and events utilizing multiple mediums to effectively engage diverse populations.
  7. Differentiate the cultural, economic and environmental impacts and opportunities associated with sustainable approaches to tourism and events.

  • Activity Requirement: at least two different recreation activities (2-6 cr. hr.)

                First Aid Requirement: certification in First Aid/CPR/AED or higher

    This certification must be current and is a prerequisite for REC 475: Internship in Recreation and Leisure Services
    Acceptable certifications can be found in the advisement manual.
