To meet the learning objectives of the Basic Communication category of the General Education requirement, students must demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication. The presentation skills requirement will provide all students with the skills and experience in making oral presentations; improve students' abilities to organize thoughts and present them orally; and teach students self critique and peer critique of oral presentation skills. As a requirement for graduation, all students will successfully complete one course designated as Presentation Skills (PS) to fulfill GE 10, Basic Communication Learning Outcome.
Course Eligibility
- Students will make at least one presentation in the course and respond to questions and comments following the presentation.
- Student must submit at least one outline with attached source list related to the presentation.
- Students must evaluate their own presentation and those of other students, according to criteria provided by the instructor.
- Faculty provide instruction in effective presentation skills for specific disciplines, including requirements and methods of preparation for oral assignments, i.e., structure, research, outlining, visual components, creativity and delivery.
Special Note: An approved Presentation Skills course taught as an on-line "asynchronous" course, does not carry the "PRES" attribute, and does not fulfill the Presentation Skills requirement. (Passed by the Presentation Skills Committee, Fall 2004).
