Physical Education [PEM]

This major in the Physical Education Department  prepares students to become physical education teachers in grades K-12. Concentrations in adapted physical education and outdoor adventure education are available to interested students.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science in Education in Physical Education and satisfactory performance on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations, students may apply for initial New York state teaching certification in the field of physical education.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and apply discipline-specific scientific and theoretical concepts critical to the development of physically educated individuals.
  2. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health enhancing levels of fitness as delineated in the NASPE K-12 Standards.
  3. Plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with local, state and national standards to address the diverse needs of all students.
  4. Demonstrate effective communication and pedagogical skills and strategies to enhance student engagement and learning.
  5. Apply assessments and reflection to foster student learning and inform instructional decisions.
  6. Demonstrate dispositions essential to becoming effective professionals.

Professional Licensure Disclosure Information 

A. General Education and Liberal Arts

  • Students can meet GEHU and Writing Intensive (WI) requirement with ENG 203, 260 or 261.
  • Students can meet GEDI requirement with EXS 290, which also meets EXS option.

B. Professional Block: 31 credit hours (2.5 grade point average required)

To be accepted into the B.S.Ed. program, students must process a teacher education application and maintain a 2.5 grade point average.

C. Professional Education: 10-11 credit hours

E. Physical Education Activities: 12 credit hours

15 credit-hour maximum

In addition to the 12 courses listed below, students must complete one credit hour of activity elective(s).

Other Requirements

Note: Specific information regarding requirements (state examinations, identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment, alcohol and drug abuse education, school antiviolence education and foreign language requirements) for New York State teaching certification can be found under Degree Requirements .

Required Workshops

Complete the following workshops prior to student teaching:

  • Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (CARR)
  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
  • Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)
