Sociology: Concentration in Criminology [SOC_CRIM]

The criminology concentration in the Sociology/Anthropology Department  is especially relevant to students considering a career in law enforcement and human services agencies such as the federal, state and local police, correctional institutions, security organizations and judicial organizations. The program includes opportunities to earn academic credit for internship experiences with community police, court and probation agencies, juvenile detention centers and other agencies involved in counseling, criminal justice and reform.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Understand and apply the basic sociological concepts. These include the sociological imagination, social structure, institutions, social stratification, culture, and power.
  2. Understand the role of social structure, culture, and social processes in the causation and amelioration of social problems.
  3. Develop a thorough knowledge of the major sociological theories and theorists.  Important theoretical perspectives include functionalism, the conflict perspective, and symbolic interactionism.  Important social theorists include C. Wright Mills, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and George Herbert Mead.
  4. Collect information necessary to address a research topic or hypothesis through library research, analysis of electronic data sources, and both quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques.
  5. Conduct basic quantitative data analysis employing computers.
  6. Communicate their ideas and the ideas of others clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Program Standard Grade Point Average 

The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program.

    • Minimum GPA of 2.0 in ANT 300-599; CRM 333, 345, 365, 373, 375, 377, 380, 383, 462, 463, 464, 477, 485; HUS 430, 470; Any SOC course
  • Sociology Major and CRIM Concentration Requirements
    • 36 credits in ANT 300-599; CRM 333, 345, 365, 373, 375, 377, 380, 383, 462, 463, 464, 477, 485; HUS 430, 470; Any SOC course

Total Credit Hours Required for Major: 36


B. Criminology Concentration Courses, required: 12 credit hours


One additional course chosen from the following:


C. Category Courses: 6-9 credit hours


  • See list under Major in Sociology.
  • Three credit hours from Category A, unless SOC 375 is chosen as the additional criminology course
  • Three credit hours from Category B
  • Three credit hours from Category C

D. Sociology Electives: 3-6 credit hours


Select 3-6 credit hours in SOC 200-599. May include one anthropology course at the 300-400 level, excluding ANT 300.

Total Credit Hours Required for Graduation: 124
